Wine-growing area
Where is the Rheingau? Between Bingen and Wiesbaden? Not quite, actually it is already behind Lorch before Bingen, with the well-known locations Krone and Assmannshäuser Höllenberg.
Where the Rhine changes direction for almost 30 kilometers and flows from east to west, the Rheingau region lies north of the river. It begins in Hochheim above the Main, which flows into the Rhine at the eastern bend. From Wiesbaden the Rhine valley opens wide and lets in a lot of intense sunlight on the vineyards, which gently slope down from the protective and wooded ridge of the Taunus foothills south to the Rhine. The broad, expansive Rhine here provides heat storage for a stable, mild climate - but serves as a reflection surface above all in the direction of the lower Rheingau from Rüdesheim. There the slopes become steeper and more rugged and the Rhine changes direction again and flows north, where it narrows significantly. The vineyards in this part of the Rheingau stretch as far as Lorchhausen, especially around Assmannshausen. Here the predominant grape variety changes from Riesling to Pinot Noir. The soils are characterized by quartzite and clay slate, especially in the steep areas of the lower Rheingau - in the middle and upper Rheingau there are loess, loam, sand, gravel and marl.
The only area Johannisberg consists of 11 large layers and 120 individual layers. The Rheingau, with its vineyards of almost 3,100 hectares, is the pioneer in the revitalization of our German vineyards. With the idea of the "first growths", the Rheingau Viticulture Association laid the foundation stone for the revaluation of the vineyards in the Burgundian style. The Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP) took over the idea of creating its "large plants" from defined vineyards, the so-called first layers. While “First Gewächse” are always dry, in the Rheingau we actually find the wine that made the Rheingau world famous, the Riesling Spätlese, made with a sweet fruit. With around 79% Riesling, the Rheingau is clearly on course for white wines. With around 12%, the Pinot Noir comes in second place in terms of volume with a significantly increasing quality. The locations Krone and Höllenberg near Assmannshausen are the most interesting locations for Pinot Noir in the Rheingau. As in the Middle Rhine, the Rhine serves as a heat store for the many sunny days. The soil consists of slate, loess, sandstone, quartz and pebbles. A few meters below Johannisberg Castle we find indications of the course of the fiftieth parallel. This degree of latitude runs through the vineyards and formerly formed the northern limit for market-relevant viticulture.
