Old Vines
Vieilles Vignes has been on wine labels in France for a long time and denotes wines made from grapes from old vines. Associated with this is the expectation of a special wine quality.
The natural output of a vine decreases after reaching a certain age. It is the same with us humans, even if we may not believe it from time to time.
With age, the vine produces fewer grapes, it produces loose and smaller grapes. The ratio of the sugar-free extract (acids, phenols and minerals) to water changes. The shade also decreases due to the declining vigor of the leaves.
Champagnol writes that the natural vigor and yield decrease after about 20 years and become so low after 50 years that the operation of conventional vineyards becomes uneconomical.
Why not produce a high quality wine from a small harvest? The grapes are ideally suited for this and the prices that can be achieved on the market justify the effort. The best best game are the wines from the Spanish Priorat, brought up in the bush shape, often over 80 years old and simply forgotten in the vineyard for a long time. These old vineyards today deliver elegant, dense and complex top-quality wines, often produced by visionaries.
Here in Germany, too, we find wines that have been vinified from old vines. Since there is no legal regulation for the age, the age of the vines can be very different, but usually the vines are not younger than 25 years. Vineyards with real roots can also be found in Franconia or on the Moselle. They have been spared phylloxera to this day.
