Vineyard

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® STROHLENBERG SANKT PAUL is 0.9 hectares in the French part of the single location Sonnenberg at 200 to 220 meters. The steep southern slope is protected by a valley basin and can therefore store a lot of heat throughout the day. The Palatinate Forest above Sankt Paul provides for the nightly cooling. After only 25-50 cm of loose soil, the vine roots hit a pure limestone base - perfect conditions for vines of the Burgundy family. Information: The GL STROHLENBERG SANKT PAUL is named after the castle of the same name located in the immediate vicinity. Since the parcel is on French territory, wines from German winemakers are not allowed to use this site name on the label. (Source: VDP.de)

Sankt Paul is a single layer of the Schweigener Sonnenberg and is located on what is now French soil in Alsace. The location owes its name to its close proximity to the former Sankt Paulin outpost of the Weissenburg monastery, which is within sight. The monks of the former Cistercian monastery already appreciated the wines of Sankt Paul in the 14th century. Not infrequently, like the wines from the “Kammerberg”, these found their way into the private chambers of the abbots. The very exposed south orientation and the very steep slope. create the best conditions for the grapes to ripen perfectly at all times. The rocky limestone soil has very little soil. After only 25-30 cm, the vine roots meet pure limestone. This fact gives us very mineral and densely structured Pinot Noir with a fine tannin structure.
