Merlot is a red wine variety that is cultivated worldwide and is particularly known for its wines. Here are some characteristics of Merlot both internationally and in Germany:

    Aroma profile: Merlot wines typically have a fruity aroma profile. They may contain notes of black cherries, blackberries, plums and berries. Depending on the growing area and climate, however, there can also be differences in aroma.

    Palate: Merlot wines are typically soft and smooth with mild tannins. They are often medium to full bodied and have a pleasing fullness. The wines can have a certain sweetness and a slightly spicy note.

    Growing Locations: Merlot is grown internationally in many wine regions including France (particularly Bordeaux), Italy, Spain, California, Chile, Argentina, Australia and South Africa. In Germany, Merlot is planted in some growing areas, especially in warmer regions such as the Palatinate and Rheinhessen.

    Climatic requirements: Merlot prefers temperate climates with sufficient sunshine. It is susceptible to frost and requires adequate sun exposure during maturation to produce optimal grapes.

    Aging Potential: Merlot wines can be approachable when young, but many quality Merlots benefit from some aging in the bottle. They develop complex flavors and a softer texture with age.

    Uses: Merlot wines are good to enjoy on their own, but they are also popular as an accompaniment to various dishes. They go well with meat dishes such as beef, lamb and game, but also with pasta, cheese and dark chocolate.

In Germany, Merlot is less common compared to some other red wine varieties because the climate is not optimal for cultivation in all regions. Nevertheless, there are some German wineries that successfully grow Merlot and produce high-quality wines. These wines can taste different from international Merlots as they are influenced by German terroir and winemaking techniques.

It is important to note that the characteristics of Merlot wines can vary greatly depending on factors such as terroir, cultivation and vinification methods, and the individual style of the winemaker. Therefore, the Merlot wines from different growing areas and wineries can differ in their properties.

On the nose the wine has strong aromas of black currant, blackberry and blueberry. The combination of new and used wood has a very harmonious effect on the delicate tannin structure. In its entirety, the result is a very complex wine with many taste attributes. Powerful yet elegant. Multi-layered and striking at the same time. Present fruit, spice, perfectly integrated acidity and the handy tannin make for a completely complete wine.

In homage to the 50th anniversary of the SOMMELIERS wine glass series, Riedel is reintroducing the SUPERLEGGERO collection, thereby setting a new standard. For me as a sommelier, choosing the right glass for the selected wine is also a question of poetry and symbiosis. There is not much to interpret here either, a wine can present its character in many glasses. After several thousand and one tastings, I can no longer present a fine wine in a Roman glass. There are already sensory differences in how tartaric acid or malic acid can present itself on the tongue and offer a fine wine a big stage or whether a wine is rather stocky and wild from start to finish. With the SUPERLEGGERO series I find a physical lightness and sensory precision, with a focus on a varietal-specific wine. My current best recommendation for a wine glass. (Somm Stephan Thum).
