Vineyard
The Erden prelate with only 1.5 hectares of vineyards is one of the best and most famous steep slopes on the Moselle. This vineyard location is extremely steep and planted with real root Rieslings that are up to 100 years old. The vines take root on stony, red clay slate weathered soil. Perfect exposure to the sun, gray and red slate floors and an extraordinarily warm microclimate make it possible to use top class Rieslings every year. Wine style: Elegant, mineral Rieslings with character, complex fruit bodies and a finesse-rich acid structure.
The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® PRÄLAT rises rocky, steep and rugged opposite the Moselle town of Erden. Bare red stone peeps out again and again between the vines, which claw into the slope here in small vineyards. The slope here is around 65 degrees (210 percent) steep - it is rarely steeper in German locations. The soil consists of ferrous, red slate with proportions of clay. The microclimate in the GL PRÄLAT is warm thanks to the protection of the Moselle bend and the surrounding vineyards, the intense sunlight on the pure southern slope and the heat-storing massive rocks. The vines are between 110 and 220 meters above sea level.
History: The Prälat location used to be on the podium but was demarcated at the end of the 19th century. The Ürziger winemaker's son, Prelate Professor Dr. Franz Steffens (1853-1930).
