Karthäuserhof
The Karthäuserhof gets its name from the Carthusian monks who received the winery in 1335 from Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg as a gift. As part of the secularization, Valentin Leonardy, General Manager of the French Army, bought the estate from the French state in 1811. The Rautenstrauchs, in the possession of the winery for the next three generations, gave the estate a worldwide reputation. Under Werner Tyrell, who took over in 1951, outstanding vintages from the 50s and 60s cemented the estate's reputation as a large producer of residual sweet wines. With Christoph Tyrell the sixth generation took over the winery in 1986. Cellar master Ludwig Breiling and Johannes Rumpf take special care in the expansion of dry wines. Many high awards are proof of the successful work. On August 1, 2012, Christoph Tyrell handed over the winery to his first cousin, Albert P. Behler, as an interfamily.
