The parcels stretch from the Rhine to a side valley of Assmannshausen and are 80 to 300 meters above sea level. The microclimate and the soil composition favor the maturity of the Pinot Noir.

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® HÖLLENBERG is one of the steepest locations in the Rheingau with a gradient of 45 percent. Most of the vineyards are located on the slopes of the Eichbach Valley, a side valley of the Rhine near Assmannshausen in the lower Rheingau, and face south and south-south-east. They are at a height of 140 to 160 meters. The purple phyllite slate is typical of GL HÖLLENBERG - it gives the soil good heat storage properties - the Rhine in turn ensures stable temperatures. The GL HÖLLENBERG is known as a Pinot Noir.

History: Pinot Noir was already grown 500 years ago in the vineyards that make up GL HÖLLENBERG today - probably since 1470. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - actually a white wine drinker - is said to praise the red wine from the vineyards on a trip along the Rhine in 1814 to have. The location name probably comes from the Old High German: "Helda" is a term for steep slope.
