Vineyard

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® WINKLERBERG WANNE in the municipality of Ihringen, a few kilometers from the Rhine. The southern tip of the Kaiserstuhl is considered to be the warmest, sunniest German wine region. The Southwest-facing Pinot Noir vines stand here on terraces supported by walls. The soils are characterized by weathered basalt, a heat-storing volcanic rock. A volcanic massif protects the vineyards from north winds. History: The physician Ernst Georg Lydtin from Ihringen was once responsible for the reclamation of the single site in Winklerberg. He acquired part of a former Dolorit quarry in the "Wanne" ("tub") in 1813 and planted vineyards there. Later the area was partially fortified with retaining walls. In the middle of the historic vineyard is the vineyard that dominates the landscape of the Dr. Heger, from which the name part "Häusleboden" is derived. (Source: VDP.de)

In the middle of the Rhine plain, approx. 50 km from Basel and a few kilometers from the Rhine, you will find the Ihringer Winklerberg. It forms the southern branch of the Kaiserstuhl with 200 - 280 m above sea level. The sun burns here with subtropical force on weathered basalt rock, which mainly characterizes the southern tip of the Kaiserstuhl. The exposed position of the Winklerberg, whose terraced vineyards are protected by large walls and sloping to the south, is due to its heat-storing volcanic rock, which absorbs the heat of the sun during the day and radiates it again at night. In the location, protected from north winds by the volcanic massif, the mild climate of the Upper Rhine Rift prevails.

The Winkerberg is a witness of an old viticulture culture in the Kaiserstuhl: Viticulture probably came to Baden by the Romans as early as the 1st century AD, was expanded in Franconian times and first mentioned in a document for the Kaiserstuhl in 769. The Winklerberg is the cradle of fine viticulture in the Kaiserstuhl. A memorial stone commemorates Georg Ernst Lythin, who auctioned scrubland here in 1813 and cultivated newly introduced, high-yield fine wine varieties from southern Italy. He had got to know them during his travels in the service of Napoleon at the foot of Vesuvius. The cultivation was successful, the vines thrived excellently - this was the hour of birth of the Kaiserstuhl noble viticulture. From 1821 Johann Baptist Hau continued the cultivation of noble varieties such as the Burgundy, Traminer and Muscat on a large area and thus decisively shaped today's wine culture in the region.
