Vineyard

The “Atlas of German Wines”, last published in 1995, takes no notice of Hatzenport. The "Dehio", the handbook of German art monuments, is different: the pretty, late-Gothic parish church of St. Johannes is praised "in a wonderful location above the Moselle, leaning against the steep mountain slope". The wine that grows in that location, the steep mountain slope, is also praiseworthy. Here the sloping red slate is criss-crossed with layers of clay, here the vineyards face south, here Riesling grows, as charming and graceful as the church that gave the location its name: “Kirchberg”.

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KIRCHBERG is located above Hatzenport, secured by vineyard walls because of its steepness. As in the place, which is considered to be the warmest and driest of the Moselle, it is also hot in the GL KIRCHBERG in summer. The slope of the south-sloping slope, which consists of reddish, strongly ferrous, sandy slate is 100 to 150 percent. The location is between 85 and 160 meters above sea level. History: The Kirchberg location is named after the Hatzenporter Johanniskirche, which, standing on a terrace, borders the vineyard to the east and overlooks the Moselle from here.
