Carl Loewen

Light, characterful Riesling is the ideal wine from the Mosel winery. Grapes ripen in high-quality terroir and with vines of typical age. In our wine cellar we try to let these natural treasures blossom with minimalist interventions. The Loewen family's philosophy is based on traditional winemaking, which is interpreted in a contemporary way at the winery.

The tradition of the winery goes back to 1803. During the secularization under Napoleon, the ancestors bought vineyards in the Maximiner Klosterlay. The winery is still based on these vineyards today. They are particularly proud of a very special vineyard: in 1896, the plot in Maximin Herrenberg was planted without roots. One of the oldest Riesling vineyards in the world. This vineyard has been preserved in its original form to this day and provides the basis for the winery's top wines. (Source: Carl Loewen Winery)

The 2024 vintage on the Moselle was characterized by strong weather contrasts. A late frost in April presented us with major challenges because the flowering was very advanced due to the warm temperatures in March and April. The slightly cooler Ritsch was hit harder than the warm, terraced Laurentiuslay. The ungrafted vines of Maximin Herrenberg were largely spared. In our estate vineyards around Leiwen, the frost damage was moderate. The old vines in particular have recovered impressively. The result is Rieslings with exceptional freshness, precise fruit and the typical minerality of our slate soils.

The vines stand on red slate and were planted there in 1902. At that time they were planted on ungrafted rootstocks. The wine underwent spontaneous fermentation.
