The VDP.GROSSE LAGE® KUPP mainly comprises the summit of the single layer Kupp, which is ideally aligned to the sun. The mountain ridge, which is always south-facing, stretches in a crescent shape from the warm Saar into the cooler Saargau. This creates two different climatic areas with different wine styles within a mountain. The soils are stony and consist mainly of weathered blue-gray Devonian slate with skeletal parts.

History: The first written mention of a location called Kupp comes from the year 1304. Since 1850 the wines have been very popular. In 1904 a bottle of Ayler Kupp cost ten gold marks, a Château d´Yquem on the other hand only nine. (Source: vdp.de)
