International Features:
Origin: Chardonnay originally comes from Burgundy in France and is now one of the most widespread white grape varieties in the world. It is grown in many countries including USA, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Chile.
Taste: The taste of Chardonnay varies depending on the country of cultivation and production technique, but typical aromas include green apple, citrus, pineapple and melon. Depending on the style, the wine can also have vanilla, buttery or nutty notes.
Style: Chardonnay can be produced in many different styles, from light and fresh to heavy and creamy. Some of the most well-known styles are the Burgundian style, which has higher acidity and less oak influence, and the Californian style, which has more oak, malolactic fermentation, and a richer, butterier flavor.
Characteristics of Chardonnay in Germany:
Origin: Chardonnay was first grown in Germany in the 1960s and is now grown in various regions including the Palatinate, Baden and Rheinhessen.
Palate: German Chardonnays often have flavors of green apple, citrus, honey and hints of oak. Flavors can be a little more subtle compared to some international styles, but full-bodied, powerful styles also exist.
Style: German Chardonnays are often produced in a dry or semi-dry style and can go well as an accompaniment to light to medium-heavy dishes such as poultry, fish or pasta. Some German winemakers also produce barrel-aged Chardonnays, adding complexity and depth to the wine
