The top of the vineyards VDP.GROSSE LAGE®
The new VDP.KLASSIFIKATION does not have any legal status under wine law, but is based on private law regulations of the predicate wineries in Germany. This statute defines the quality of a wine according to the "terroir" - the origin in connection with the quality. The classification system only applies to the VDP member companies, but should be regarded as groundbreaking for German quality viticulture.
The aim of the new VDP.classification is to determine the value of the best locations in Germany, to ensure the preservation of a unique cultural landscape, to regain the importance of great dry wines from Germany and to emphasize the importance of the traditional, fruity-sweet predicate wines.
Dry wines from VDP.GROSSER LAGE © are referred to as VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS © and are bottled in a special bottle with the GG grape logo embossed on the glass. The dry taste is mandatory. Semi-dry wines have no other designation. The indication of taste semi-dry is optional. The same applies to fine dry wines.
Fruity and noble sweet wines have the classic predicates "Kabinett", "Spätlese", "Auslese", "Beerenauslese", "Trockenbeerenauslese" and "Eiswein".
A wine from VDP.GROSSER LAGE © bears the name of the winery and the grape variety as well as the name of the location without the place name as an indication of its origin on the label. Every wine from VDP.GROSSER LAGE © has a corresponding label on the capsule.

The location with an approximately 12-15% gradient to the west extends along the Pfingstbach above our winery directly to the north and is at an altitude of 120 - 170 m above sea level.
The soils consist of fertile, gravelly loess, interspersed with iron-rich quartzites and clay marls. An old common name is “Eiserberg”, which refers to this rock base.
The Große Gewächs come from a special plot in Lenchen. It is located just a few steps away from our winery and was planted in 1964. Very narrow rows and the old vines develop an absolutely magical overall taste.

The plot is located on the banks of the Rhine and faces south with a slight slope.
The soil is calcareous, sandy loess, partly interspersed with terrace sediments and rocks of the Alzey Formation (marine sand).
The vines are 45 to 65 years old and are therefore the oldest in our stock. They only produce a few, small-berry grapes with complex, intense aromas.
The river directly shapes the climate: it is like a temperature moderator. The constant air circulation compensates for peaks in cold and heat.
In addition, the reflection of the sun's rays on the water surface brings a radiation quality that is particularly beneficial for aroma development.
