wine description

2024 MANDELBERG Weisser Burgunder GG

VDP.GROSSE LAGE®: 2024 MANDELBERG Weisser Burgunder Großes Gewächs | dry

the vineyard:

The Mandelberg vineyard is located southwest of Birkweiler and about 500m southeast of the Kastanienbusch vineyard. The vineyards are located on a ridge that stretches from the Hohenberg in the west via the Rauhberg to the east in the Rhine valley. The best plots in the Mandelberg vineyard are up to 250m above sea level. high east slopes. The slope gradient is between 10% and 30% gradient.

soil:

The faults in the Rhine Graben caused a very strong "uplift" in the area around Siebeldingen, Birkweiler, Albersweiler and Frankweiler, which revealed very low-lying geological formations, for example the "Rotliegend" from the Permian period in the nearby Kastanienbusch and formations from the Triassic period: red sandstone, shell limestone and Keuper. The vines in the best vineyards of the Mandelberg are rooted in soil that was formed more than 200 million years ago, in the time of the shell limestone. Typical for this very calcareous soil from maritime sediments are the beige-grey, quite angular limestones. They often contain fossils of marine animals and plants, such as the shells that give them their name. Shell limestone is the ideal basis for fine, elegant wines with great development and aging potential. The soil of the Mandelberg is a bit more loamy and deeper than the shell limestone soil in the Siebeldingen location "Im Sonnenschein".
