The rarely cultivated, complex and capricious Frühburgunder is an old grape variety in Bürgstadt. It is a small-berry brother to Pinot Noir and produces only minimal yields with an average of 22hl/ha. The "R" comes from the best pinot noir parcel of the Centgrafenberg. Compared to the finer Pinot Noir, the Frühburgunder is spicier and has darker berries and is slightly smokier. Overall, the wine is stronger, it is incredibly complex and often has the taste of dark chocolate. The grapes are particularly popular with birds, wild boar and wasps.
