wine description

2022 ZELLERWEG AM SCHWARZEN HERRGOTT Riesling GG

VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2022 Mölsheim ZELLERWEG AM SCHWARZEN HERRGOTT Riesling Grosses Gewächs | trocken

The Black Lord is at the beginning of the Zellertal Basin, which opens a few kilometers to the east and ends with the Frauenberg. Here as there, the pure limestone bed is predominant. The main difference is made by the microclimatic conditions. While the Frauenberg is characterized by the open, exposed location and the draft, the Black Lord is located on a steep, narrow break edge, which again protects the location from rain and the full harshness of the incidence of light. The place was mentioned for the first time in the records of St. Philip of Zell. This Irish monk Christianized the region around 700 AD and founded a monastery near Zell (cellular). In this location, which was a quarter of an hour's walk from his monastery, St. Philip planted his altar vineyard. So that the monks did not have to run back to prayer every time, they also erected a cross there, which over time weathered black and gave the location its name. Due to the written record, the Black Lord is today one of the oldest documented wine-growing locations. The border between Rheinhessen and the northern Palatinate runs right through the Black Lord.

The Riesling from the Black Lord is a light wine wrested from the shadows. The precision that Riesling produces here is unique even under the barren limestone cliffs of the Wonnegau. Nothing serves or is an accessory, everything is only about itself. That goes beyond Riesling, reminiscent of the great wines from Meursault, and yet: only Riesling can do that.
