Wine-growing area
On the Moselle, Riesling rules with almost 60%, followed by Müller-Thurgau with around 15%. We also find an autochthonous grape variety on the Moselle, the Elbling.
The Moselle lives from exports, and not without reason, the globally valued fruity-sweet Rieslings, whether Spätlese, Auslese or Beeren- and Trockenbeerenauslese have shaped this reputation.
The Moselle, Saar and Ruwer have a cool climate like a picture book. In most years the ripening time of the Riesling grape variety, which is clearly dominant here, is higher here than in most other German regions and can be up to 160 days - in other places, 100 days are the classic orientation mark. This gives the grapes plenty of time to develop flavors. The three rivers - especially the Moselle - on the one hand ensure a stable, moderate climate as an inert heat store, at the same time their movement also creates good air circulation, they take warm air with them, so that at night cooler layers refresh the grapes on the slopes .
Like a picture book, the landscape here is around the 50th parallel. In the pronounced windings of the Moselle, there are sometimes extremely steep locations - where they face south, it can get hot in summer. The dominant dark slate in the floors, which works like a heat accumulator, also does the rest. The vines overgrow because at dizzying heights, in some places on stone terraces or in pole training, so that vineyard work is very demanding in the steep slopes and can only be done by hand in some places.
On the Saar and Ruwer it is a little cooler, the vineyards are on average higher up and the influence of the two rivers is less strong, as the locations are often in side valleys. The most famous German wine from the VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® SCHARZHOFBERG is produced on the Saar, which has also achieved the highest price for a bottle of wine worldwide with a price of 14,566 euros (2003 SCHARZHOFBERG Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese from the VDP.Weingut Egon Müller) VDP.MOSEL 2015).
