Vineyard

With a steep incline of 60 to 100 percent, the south-west facing VDP.GROSSE LAGE® (Wehlener) SONNENUHR extends across from Wehlen along the Moselle. The vines stand on pure, medium-depth Devonian slate weathered soil. The rock content is quite high here. The microclimate in the GL is favored on the one hand by the long duration of sunshine, on the other hand by the strong heat reflection of the floors and the nearby Moselle. The single site Wehlener Sonnenuhr (approx. 40 hectares) extends between 110 and 320 meters above sea level. The main grape variety with over 99 percent is Riesling, which is largely cultivated in this steep terrain using traditional single-pole training. History: The Wehlener winemaker Jodocus Prüm erected a sundial in each of the neighboring vineyard slopes of Wehlen and Zeltingen in 1842 in order to offer the residents a time orientation. The wines produced here were called "Wehlener and Zeltinger" (local wines). It was not until the beginning of the 20th century that single-layer markings became established. (Source: VDP.de)
