Riesling is a versatile grape variety that is grown in many different wine-growing regions including Germany, France, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Riesling wines tend to have high acidity and can range from dry to sweet. The wines can exhibit aromas of green apples, citrus, peaches, apricots and minerals. Riesling wines can also have a slight petrochemical note due to the influence of the soil and environment.
Riesling is the most important grape variety in Germany and is cultivated in almost all wine-growing regions of the country. The wines made from Riesling are usually acidic and have a pronounced fruitiness. Depending on where they are grown, they can range from dry to sweet, and often have aromas of green apples, citrus, peaches, apricots, and minerals. The Riesling wines from Germany can also show a slight petrochemical note, which is due to the influence of the sun. The best Riesling wines from Germany have an excellent acid structure, high complexity and a long lifespan.

The location with an approximately 12-15% gradient to the west extends along the Pfingstbach above our winery directly to the north and is at an altitude of 120 - 170 m above sea level.
The soils consist of fertile, gravelly loess, interspersed with iron-rich quartzites and clay marls. An old common name is “Eiserberg”, which refers to this rock base.
The Große Gewächs come from a special plot in Lenchen. It is located just a few steps away from our winery and was planted in 1964. Very narrow rows and the old vines develop an absolutely magical overall taste.

The plot is located on the banks of the Rhine and faces south with a slight slope.
The soil is calcareous, sandy loess, partly interspersed with terrace sediments and rocks of the Alzey Formation (marine sand).
The vines are 45 to 65 years old and are therefore the oldest in our stock. They only produce a few, small-berry grapes with complex, intense aromas.
The river directly shapes the climate: it is like a temperature moderator. The constant air circulation compensates for peaks in cold and heat.
In addition, the reflection of the sun's rays on the water surface brings a radiation quality that is particularly beneficial for aroma development.
