Wine-growing area

With its almost 16,000 hectares, Baden is the third largest cultivation area and the warmest region in Germany around the Kaiserstuhl. Baden stretches from Tauberfranken in the north to Lake Constance in the south. With seven areas, Baden is mapped in a very complex manner. From north to south it is the areas of Tauberfranken, Badische Bergstrasse, Kraichgau, Ortenau, Breisgau, Kaiserstuhl with Tuniberg, Markgräfler Land and Lake Constance. We find numerous soil formations such as lime, clay, marl, loess, keuper, moraine gravel and volcanic soils. Many winegrowers are organized as cooperatives, but we focus, as always, on the independent producer bottlers.

Our Burgundians like the warm Baden temperatures. This is how we find Pinot Blanc and Pinot Blanc and their relatives Auxerrois and Chardonnay. Their share of the total vine stock is, however, rather small and is less than 10%. We mustn't forget our Pinot Noir. This treasure also delivers quite a few complex and aging red wines in Baden. Around 6,000 hectares are planted with Pinot Noir, making it number 1 in Baden, followed by Müller-Thurgau with around 2,700 hectares and third place with Pinot Gris with around 1,600 hectares.
