Ahr

Wine-growing area

terraced - red - microclimate
The northern wine-growing region of Ahr with around 560 hectares of vineyards comprises one area, one large site and 43 individual sites. With around 86%, the red types of wine dominate the Ahr, such as Domina, Frühburgunder, Portuguese, Dornfelder and of course the Pinot Noir. It was precisely this that raised the red wines from the Ahr to the top German league. The vineyards stretch between Sinzig in the east and Altenahr in the west, along the Ahr. Let's think in terms of locations from Kapellenberg in Easter to the Übigberg vineyard in the west.

In the partly terraced vineyards we find a greenhouse-like climate in the summer. The vineyards are protected from the cold north winds in winter by the wooded mountain ranges. When hiking in summer from the vineyards through the forest to the areas behind, the difference in temperature can be felt. With an average winter temperature of around 2 to 3 ° C, the coolest of all seasons is quite mild.

Geologically we can divide the Ahr into two areas, in the upper Ahr area, between Altenahr and Marienthal, if we move down the river, i.e. from west to east, we find greywacke and weathered slate soil. If we continue our virtual journey downriver, we will still find greywacke and weathered slate soil behind Walporzheim in the upper area of the steep slopes, as in the church tower and slate lay areas. In the lower area of the vineyards, such as the vineyards near Bad Neuenahr up to the Landskrone near Lohrdorf, we find more clay and loess loam soil.

Arranging the wine styles according to the soil formations of the vineyards is difficult. If we find more filigree, fruity and mineral wines in the upper Ahr valley and more aromatic and full-bodied, fat wines in the lower Ahr valley, there are always exceptions. This is certainly due to the fact that the winemakers follow different philosophies with regard to their craft, that the microclimate in the individual vineyards varies and the rock formation in the plots is different.

But we are now looking forward to fine and fat Pinot Noir with character and fresh, acidic white wines from the large Klosterberg area in the Walporzheim / Ahrtal area.
