wine description

2020 PETTENTHAL Riesling GG

VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2020 Nierstein PETTENTHAL Riesling Grosses Gewächs | dry

Adjacent to the Rothenberg to the south is the Pettenthal site. Actually, the two layers merge as part of the red slope, so that the orientation, slope and soil composition are almost identical. In all probability, the name Pettenthal comes from the time when the vineyards were still owned by the church (Paters Tal = valley of the monks). Here, too, dominates the red slate and red sandstone, the famous "red lying".

At about 170 meters, the Pettenthal is slightly higher than the Rothenberg, and the soil is therefore a tad barren, so that the vines have to root very deeply in the soft stone in order to get to food and minerals. The higher and steeper the tub, the more difficult the living conditions are for the vines. And that is the prerequisite for great wines.

Our parcel in Pettenthal is the steepest vineyard parcel in Rheinhessen with a slope of more than 70%. In addition, the ledge that runs through the entire Red Slope is most pronounced here on the surface. The humus layer is extremely thin and nutrients for the vine can only be found deep in the stony soil. Mechanical management is completely impossible. Here you can only work by hand.
