wine description

2020 ÖLBERG Riesling GG

VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2020 Nierstein ÖLBERG Riesling Grosses Gewächs | dry

Like many great sites that have been known and famous for centuries for great wines, the name of the Mount of Olives also points to an earlier monastery and its biblical reference. The fact that the wines from the Mount of Olives are those with the densest viscosity and that the proportion of essential oils is particularly high certainly supported the naming.

In the Red Slope, the Mount of Olives is our southernmost location. It runs in the central area of the Red Slope in an east-west direction as a far-reaching main site and is the only one of our Red Slope sites that has full southern exposure. The rocky soil is very rugged and the vineyard work is arduous. Our win has a gradient of more than 60% and is considered a classic steep slope.

While the rock bands rise to the surface in Rothenberg and Pettenthal, the soil in the Mount of Olives is more porous and permeable. The red clay slate has been rubbed up over millions of years and has virtually replaced the humus layer. Our south-facing plot acts like an ideal heat store in which the grapes evenly reach their full physiological ripeness.

In our Riesling from the Mount of Olives, the fruit and stone aromas are perfectly balanced. The sweet fruit and the salty minerality have merged into a blooming summer flower meadow with hints of honeydew melon and nectarine zest. The wine is almost oily in the mouth, with ripe acidity and a fine nougat note. The opulent body is buffered by a delicate mineral flavor, which comes to the fore with some bottle aging. Our distinguished nobleman: more being than appearance! (Source: Weingut Kühling-Gillot)
