wine description

2020 FRAUENBERG Riesling GG

VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2020 Nieder-Flörsheim FRAUENBERG Riesling Grosses Gewächs | dry

A little north of Hohen-Sülzen is the district of Flörsheim, in which our Frauenberg vineyard is located. The location was mentioned in a document in 1290 with the name "an frauwenhalten". Originally the mountain was owned by a nunnery. The Frauenberg impresses with its consistently white profile. The overlay consists of limestone gravel, while the subsoil is pure limestone rock. The exposed location and the elevated ridge of the Frauenberg demand everything from the vines: on the one hand, the southern orientation, on the other hand, the constantly cool winds that leave the grapes standing as if on a train. Together with the mineral-rich, but extremely barren soil, in which the vine has to root very deeply in order to obtain nutrients, the conditions for a long and healthy vegetation period are ideal. No wonder that the grapes from the Frauenberg are the ones we harvest the latest every year. The Riesling from the Frauenberg is an extremely dense and compact wine, but in contrast to the Kirchenstück, in which the lush fruit reigns, the Frauenberg is a lean and very reserved wine. The stone dominates: herbal spices, cool aromas reminiscent of tobacco, polished acidity and a steel mineral structure.

The Frauenberg wants to be conquered. It takes time. He needs leisure. But then he rewards with an almost breathtaking elegance and delicacy that plays ping-pong with the well-known taste patterns: if you discover the power, it is immediately overtaken by the filigree; If you think you have found the cool spiciness, the brilliant minerality suddenly comes to the fore.
