wine description

2019 KIRCHENSTÜCK Spätburgunder GG

VDP.GROSSE LAGE: 2019 Hohen-Sülzen KIRCHENSTÜCK Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs | trocken

The church piece is from the best vineyard in Hohen-Sülzen. It is a very old vineyard that was mentioned in a document before the Thirty Years' War. Her original name was Griebelsteyn - and this onomatopoeic name is very apt. Because the surface of the church piece consists of soft, calcareous stones that you can rub between your fingers.

The Pliocene soils are criss-crossed by limestone banks and due to the Hohen-Sülz basin, the daytime temperatures are always a little higher than in our locations in Mölsheim or Flörsheim. Hohen-Sülzen is located in the so-called Eisbachtal; and as the name suggests, the cold stream that rises in the Donnersberg massif has a significant influence on the cooler nights.

This Pinot Noir comes from our oldest Pinot Noir vines. The yields are extremely low and the chalky subsoil brings a wonderfully cool freshness to the wine. The dark fruit aromas of currants and black cherries have been withdrawn in favor of a deep herbalism. In the mouth the wine remains dark and spicy, and minerality and earthiness dominate. This Pinot Noir matured in 1-year barrique barrels from Burgundy for almost 2 years.
